Other Memory
Privacy policy.
The free Other Memory iPhone companion is designed around files you control. It has no advertising, user account, purchasing system, behavioural analytics, or tracking SDK. The developer does not receive your vault or notes through the app.

01
Data you control
Other Memory reads and writes the Zettelkasten folder you explicitly choose. That folder can be in iCloud Drive or another location made available through Apple’s Files system. It may contain your Markdown notes, authored links, indexes, bibliography handoff files, images, and related working material.
The app stores a security-scoped bookmark on the device so it can reopen the chosen folder. It does not copy the vault to a Weirdgears server, and Weirdgears cannot see or retrieve it. If you use iCloud Drive, Apple processes and synchronises those files under your Apple account and Apple’s privacy terms.
02
Camera and selected photos
Source capture can use the camera or a photograph you deliberately select. Apple’s on-device Vision framework reads barcodes and text from the image. Other Memory does not upload the image to Weirdgears or to a recognition service.
The image itself is not retained by Other Memory after analysis. Recognised text and identifiers may be kept as editable capture evidence in the pending literature note and bibliography handoff files inside your chosen vault.
03
Optional bibliographic lookups
When you ask Other Memory to identify a source, the app may send the relevant public identifier—such as an ISBN, DOI, PMID, PMCID, or arXiv ID—to one of the services below. The request also necessarily exposes technical connection data such as your IP address to that provider. Notes, vault contents, photographs, and recognised page text are not sent with the lookup.
- Open Library for ISBN metadata;
- Crossref for DOI metadata;
- DataCite as a DOI fallback;
- NCBI, PubMed, and PMC for biomedical identifiers; and
- arXiv for arXiv metadata.
Each provider processes the request under its own terms and privacy policy. Lookup is optional: you can enter and edit bibliographic details manually instead.
04
Diagnostics and support
Other Memory contains no third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking SDK. It does not send usage events or crash reports directly to Weirdgears. Apple may provide the developer with aggregated App Store information or diagnostics that users have chosen to share with app developers, under Apple’s own privacy settings and terms.
If you email support, Weirdgears receives your email address and whatever information you choose to include. Support correspondence is used only to answer the request, diagnose the issue, improve the product, and meet any applicable record-keeping or legal obligations.
05
No purchasing information
Other Memory for iPhone is a free companion app. It has no in-app purchases, subscriptions, or paid upgrades. The iPhone app does not use StoreKit to maintain a purchase entitlement and does not receive or store payment details, purchase history, transaction identifiers, subscription status, or other purchasing information.
06
Retention and deletion
Vault files remain where you chose to store them until you edit or delete them. Removing the app does not delete an external iCloud Drive or Files folder. Use Other Memory, the Files app, or the Mac workbench to manage those files. Switching or disconnecting a vault removes the app’s local bookmark; uninstalling the app removes its on-device settings.
Support messages are retained only while needed to handle the request, preserve a useful history of the issue, or satisfy a legal obligation. You may ask for support correspondence to be deleted when no overriding legal obligation requires its retention.
07
Your choices and rights
You choose the vault, whether to use camera or photo capture, whether to perform an online metadata lookup, and what to send in a support message. You can deny camera access and use manual entry. You can also revoke camera permission in iOS Settings and stop using online lookup at any time.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, restrict, object to, or delete personal data held by the developer. Because the developer does not receive your vault through the app, requests to Weirdgears normally concern support correspondence. You may also lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority.
